It’s Time To Return To The Podium

You can hear it in his voice; Jason Johnson wants to return to where his HM racing team should be – back on the podium and in the winners circle once again.

That’s just what Johnson is like when it comes to his racing, he loves it and enjoys it more when he’s winning races. It’s something that he and the team have done on a number of occasions this summer, but it’s been too long since his last taste of the victory champagne and as he heads west he wants to turn the last three weeks around.

At the last five meetings the results have shown that at times the #47 Haynes Labour Hire Maxim was fast enough to get the job done, just not over the entire night of racing. As you can see in the results below it show that if they went well in time trials, they would struggle in  the heats or they would qualify poorly with points and have a great run in the final.

  • Kings Challenge Mt Gambier  - Time trial 17th Heat 1 DNF Heat 2 3rd A-Main 7th (Started 12th)
  • Warnambool Classic Night 1 – Time trial 5th Heat 1 1st Heat 2 5th Prelim A-Main 2nd
  • Warnambool Classic Night 2 – Heat 4th A-Main 7th (started 4th)
  • PWWSS round 12 Warnambool – Time Trial 19th Heat 1 2nd Heat 2 2nd Shootout 2nd A-Main 4th.

As Johnson explains “We have been a top five to ten car but we have to get better over the entire night, from the time we drop the tailgate till we load up. Over the past week we have been fast, but only for a portion of the night or when we have looked good something’s happened like at the Classic.”

The run in to the Grand Annual Classic final was one the team was pleased with until the final when he clipped the wall with his right rear tyre while fighting it out with Brooke Tatnell. Suspecting there were problems he headed to the bottom of the track. “I thought the tyre might have been going down and I thought it would be safer down there if it exploded. In the end there was nothing wrong with it and I dropped back seventh.”

It’s been frustrating for the team but they are in a positive frame of mind heading in to this weekend at Adelaide “It’s a place where I have won many times and I feel good about this weekend. The team at HM racing has worked so hard and it would be great to reward them with a win.”

And that run continued last weekend at Speedway City.

He secured a second and a third in his opening heats and enjoyed a fine run in the dashes, only to see it all come undone during a yellow light with about fifteen laps to go in the finale. Some contact racing with Max Dumesny had caused the bead on the left rear tyre to move and the tyre deflated, resulting with a DNF against his name.

He heads west for the next round of the PWWSS at the home town of car owner Alan Haynes, Kalgoorlie. Nothing would please Johnson more than to take a win in front of Haynes family and friends and would go in to the meeting full of confidence he has the team and car for the job, all he requires is a little luck and the top of the podium could be his to claim come Wednesday night.
